Dr. David E. Barnes Obituary

Dr. David E. Barnes, 90, of Duxbury, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on 21 July 2025.


He was born in Jamaica Plain, Boston to Mary Loretta Barnes and Orville Louis Barnes on March 23, 1935. He was a graduate of Boston Latin School (Class of 1954) and went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree from Tufts University (Class of 1958) and a Doctorate in Dental Surgery from Temple University in 1962. 


After graduating from Temple Dental School, Dr. Barnes, began active service as a First Lieutenant in the United States Army Dental Corps and was deployed overseas to Munich, Germany.  In 1965, he was posted to the United States Military Academy (USMA) in West Point, New York where he continued as part of the Dental Corps.  He retired from Active Duty as a Major in 1967, after receiving a National Defense Service Medal, to pursue his specialist Master of Dental Orthodontics from Farleigh Dickinson University (Clas of 1969).


He subsequently started his orthodontic practice in 1970 and continued in the Hanover-based offices until 1994, when he retired to spend more time with his beloved wife Joan and increase his involvement in community activities with his local parish, Holy Family (Duxbury, Massachusetts). He was a talented golfer, first learning to play after hours in his job at Wianno Caddy Camp (Osterville, Massachusetts) where he started as a 12 year old boy. Dr. Barnes was a long-time resident of Duxbury, Massachusetts, he loved the town and all it had to offer.  One of his favourite spots was Shipyard Lane, where he often sat at sunset, counting his many blessings. He will be missed by his many friends in the town. 


He is survived by his daughter Kathleen Barnes (Jonathan Carr) and grandchildren Caitlin, Kelly and Ian Carr, of Liverpool England; his daughter Dr. Kelly Barnes Morrissey (John Morrissey) of Wayland, Massachusetts and his son David Barnes, Jr. (Gwynne Barnes) of Malvern, Pennsylvania and grandchildren Lindsey, David III, and James Barnes) and his generous, kind and loving companion of 14 years, Anita Nicklas, of Harwich, Massachusetts. 


He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Joan L. Barnes (nee McDonnell) and daughter, Deborah Elizabeth Barnes. 


A celebration of Dr. Barnes’ life will include visitation at Holy Family Parish, 601 Tremont Street, Duxbury on Monday, July 28th from 9:30am until 10:45am followed by a celebratory mass at 11am.  The burial services, with military funeral honors, will take place at Mayflower Cemetery.
