Donald R. Smith, 89, of Hanson, passed away peacefully on July 20, 2025.
Beloved husband of 65 years to Patricia (Badore) Smith, Don was a devoted family man and a pillar of strength and kindness to all who knew him. He was the cherished father of David Smith and his wife Lisa (Loftus) of Middleboro, Peter Smith and his wife Cheryl (Turner) of Pembroke, and Michael Smith and his wife Anne (Zanellato) of Halifax. Don was a proud and loving grandfather to Christopher, Melissa, Evan, Amanda, Ethan, and Dylan.
Donald Smith was born in Quincy on June 11, 1936, and spent his early childhood in Braintree before settling in Hanson, where he lived for more than 85 years. He was the son of the late George Douglas and Ella (Andersen) Smith, and the cherished brother of the late Robert and Paul Smith. Don is lovingly remembered by his nephews and niece—Douglas, Kevin, and Patti Smith of New Hampshire—children of his late brother Robert and sister-in-law Norma (Hedin) Smith. He is also survived by many caring nieces, nephews, extended family members, and lifelong friends, along with many others who affectionately knew him as “Uncle Don,” a title he held with love and honor across generations.
Don spent over 32 years working at The Christian Science Monitor in Boston as a linotype operator and machinist in the M&R Shop. After retiring, he continued to share his talents with the community by operating a small engine repair service in Hanson for more than 25 years. His work ethic, ingenuity, and integrity were admired by all who knew him.
Together with Patricia, Don enjoyed traveling, being a longtime member of the Model T Club, and making countless memories with their extended family. He was a proud Freemason and Tyler at the Wampatuck Lodge A.F. & A.M. of East Bridgewater for over 63 years. While quiet about his beliefs, Don's faith was central to his values and guided his life with humility and grace.
Don will be remembered for his warmth, sense of humor, and his remarkable ability to bring joy to others. He had a nickname for nearly everyone and a quick wit that enlivened every conversation. His love for family, his loyalty to friends, and his generous spirit leave a legacy that will endure in the hearts of all who knew him.
He will be deeply missed.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, July 29, beginning at 10:30 AM at the Shepherd Funeral Home, 216 Main St. (Rt. 106), Kingston 02364. A funeral service will follow at 12:30 PM at the funeral home, with interment at Halifax Cemetery. Donation: In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Norwell VNA and Hospice 120 Longwater Drive Norwell, MA 02061 nvana.org, who provided exemplary care to Don, or charity of your choice.
