Arthur E. Mahoney Obituary

On June 29,2025, Arthur Edward Mahoney, age 73, loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and dear friend passed away peacefully at his home with his two daughters by his side.

Arthur was born in South Boston on January 29,1952 to Irene (Callahan) and Francis Mahoney. From the day he was born, he was larger than life not just in size but in spirit.

He was a 1969 graduate of South Shore Vocational Technical School where he was a part of the mechanics program.

Art was 5 years old when he told his mother that he wanted to be a firefighter when he grew up and that is exactly what he did.

He joined the Weymouth Fire Department in 1975 where he was also a member of the Dive Team Search and Rescue. Because Art was the fixer of all things, he was promoted to the Chief of Maintenance Department in 1983 until he retired in 1996.

To keep him busy and connected to his love of all things firetrucks and repairing them, he opened and ran New England Nozzle and Valve Repair for over 15 years with one of his many lifelong friends. He fixed parts for firetrucks all over the country and took great pride in his ability to repair anything mechanical.

There was nothing that made him prouder than his girls and grandchildren. Despite his enormous size and tough exterior, he was so loving and sensitive towards everyone. His grandchildren lovingly referred to him as Grandpa, Pop- Pop and Q-Tip for his fluffy white hair. There wasn’t a play, recital, or sporting event he’d miss.

Art also never missed an opportunity to socialize with his friends by going to trivia, keno, or his beloved bi-weekly breakfasts with his retired firefighter buddies.

No matter the occasion, Art would proudly sport his scaly cap- a nod to his Irish pride, a t-shirt or sweatshirt adorned with some type of firefighter emblem, and his infamous white handlebar mustache.

He will forever be remembered for his quick wit, smart alec comments, pranks, and contagious laugh. He was a lover of fun, shenanigans, and the truest meaning of ‘When Irish Eyes are Smiling’ with those big green eyes, he was always up to something. There was nothing he wouldn’t do for the people he loved.

He will be wildly missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his two daughters, Carrie Doughty of Gray, Maine and Jamie Schmidt of Pembroke, five grandchildren Madison, Catherine, Colin, Ariya and Ryder. Siblings Mary and Doug Terrell of Delaware, Marilyn Gould of Hull, and Elizabeth and Larry Brothers of Plymouth. His beloved godson Todd Krupa of Plymouth and many nephews, nieces, great nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his siblings Irene Thompson and Bobby Mahoney.

Visiting hours will be held at Shepherd Funeral Home 216 Main Street Kingston, on Monday, July 7,2025 from 4pm-8pm.

As Artie always brought the party, there will be a Celebration of Life at a later date.
