John L. Melchin aged 86 of Pembroke, passed away at home on May 28, 2025 of natural causes. He is predeceased by his parents Lewis and Marie Melchin of Dorchester,sister Margaret M. Sullivan and brother- in- law Thomas F. Sullivan of Braintree.
John attended Boston Latin High School. He remained life long friends with many of them. After graduation he entered the monastery in New Hampshire for a year. He was a devoted catholic and supported many missionary charities.
In 1964 John volunteered for the Army. He spent several years in Germany where he was a medic. During that service he was befriended by a surgeon from Boston. After his discharge from the army John went to work with that surgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital in the surgical suites as a surgical technician. John remained at MGH for his entire professional career of 40 years.
In his retirement John dedicated his time to the community. He worked at Pembroke Council on Aging for 18 years. He provided medical rides, delivered Meals on Wheels and was Treasurer. Recently having been awarded and recognized for outstanding Volunteer Service.
John was the patriarch of our family and uncle to many. He was loved and will be greatly missed by 8 nieces and nephews, 12 grand nieces and nephews and 9 great nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held Monday June 16, 2025 from 4-6pm 216 Main St. Kingston, MA . A funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday June 17th 10am at St. Josephs Church, Main St Kingston with a burial at MA National Cemetery in Bourne MA at 1:15pm.
The family would like to acknowledge and give special thanks to John's long time neighbor Jack Graham for his kindness and support of our uncle.
