Obituary of Marvin S. Nickerson

Please share a memory of Marvin to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Marvin Scott Nickerson, 80, of Kingston, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on October 4, 2024, due to an extended period of health complications. He was born in Plymouth, MA, on September 29, 1944, to Dorothy Elizabeth (Hadaway) Nickerson and William E. Nickerson, both of whom preceded him in death.

Marvin was a devoted husband of 32 years to his beloved wife, Carol Ann Nickerson (Cavanaugh), and a cherished brother to Maxene Benevides of Duxbury, MA. He was also predeceased by his sisters, Sandra Young and Martha Hathaway.

He is survived by his two sons, William Nickerson and Scott Nickerson, along with their spouses. Marvin is also remembered fondly by his stepchildren, Derek and Amy Harkins, Chris and Jill Harkins, and Kelly Harkins and her partner Peter McNeil. He was lovingly known as “Papa” to his grandchildren.

Growing up in Duxbury, Marvin enjoyed working alongside his father on the Crowell cranberry bogs. A proud graduate of Duxbury High School, he played varsity baseball and basketball and was voted captain of the basketball team. He had the honor of playing at the historic Boston Garden during two basketball championship games, a shining moment in his life.

After graduating, Marvin enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served as a patrolman and fought bravely in Vietnam. He later worked for many years at Armstrong World Industries as a machine operator until his retirement.

In his spare time, he coached youth sports in Kingston, including basketball and baseball. An avid sports enthusiast, Marvin’s passion for New England sports was unwavering, especially for the Red Sox and the Patriots. His collection of sports garments and memorabilia goes unmatched. He enjoyed meeting friends at the Royal Garden in Kingston, MA for drinks with his wife and playing Keno. He was an avid reader and enjoyed watching reruns of old western shows and classics like M*A*S*H and Leave It to Beaver. Marvin also had a soft spot for his beloved black cat, Ashley, whom he lovingly called his ‘Baby Girl’.

Marvin’s warmth, kindness, and humor will be missed by all who knew him. A public wake will be held at the Shepherd Funeral Home in Kingston, MA Wednesday, October 9th from 4-7 PM, and a private burial will follow at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, MA.

The family would like to thank the Brockton Veterans Medical Hospice/Palliative Center for their warmth, kindness, and care. The family requests that those who wish to express sympathy consider making a donation to the VA Brockton Healthcare System, building 7-2-C Hospice Unit, 940 Belmont Street, Brockton MA 02301 in Marvin's memory.
