Obituary of Mary Margaret Goodale

Please share a memory of Mary to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Mary Margaret Goodale of Duxbury, MA, died peacefully at her home surrounded by loved ones on January 18, 2018. She was 91 years old. Predeceased by both her loving husband, Dr. Fairfield Goodale, Jr., and her son Fairfield III (“Tad”), Mary Margaret is survived by her remaining four children—Anna, John, Susan, and Timothy; their respective spouses—Harvey (Peterson), Martha, Chris (Brown), Kathy, and Tad’s wife,Lindsay; her fifteen grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Born in Westwood, MA, Mary Margaret was the daughter of Arthur T. Lyman and Margaret Perkins Rice Lyman and sibling of A.T. Lyman (Teddy), Edith Kuhn, and Camilla Lyman. Mary Margaret (MM) was married for 70 years to Fairfield Goodale, former Dean of the Medical College of Georgia and of Bowman Gray School of Medicine, until Fair’s death in 2015. During their years together, MM and Fair lived in a variety of beautiful locales: a historic Virginia farm (“Contention”) outside Richmond, a beach-house retreat in the West Indies; a 1700’s antique in Augusta, GA; a saltwater farm in Brooklin, ME; a hill-top ranch in Santa Ynez, CA; and a waterfront bungalow outside Charleston, SC. Their final destination, a family-friendly house in Duxbury, MA, was near their extended family and their original, newly-wed home in Framingham, MA. Regardless of locale Mary Margaret loved cultivating her elaborate gardens and nurturing a variety of animals including miniature donkeys and goats; chickens, ducks, and geese; show-caliber horses; dogs and cats of all breeds, four pigs (Eeeny, Meeny, Miny, and Moe); Roberto, the parrot; and, even a boa constrictor named Rosie. Mary Margaret was an accomplished athlete—as a student at the Winsor School, on the tennis court and golf course in her middle years, and as a lifelong equestrian. In lieu of flowers, a donation to Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston or your local SPCA would be in keeping with Mary Margaret’s spirit. A memorial service will be held in the spring at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Saco, ME. Mary Margaret’s final entry in her diary was “love to all.”
